Wooden frame 80x70cm. Black lacquered wood frame with gold leaf gilding, antique glass.
6 framed color engravings depicting the story of Jeanne Gray, Jeanne Grey or Lady Jane Grey in English, born in October 1537 and died in London on February 12, 1554. She was briefly Queen of England in July 1553, between the death of her cousin Edward VI and her deposition in favor of Mary I. Her short reign earned her the nickname Nine Days Queen.
Great-granddaughter of Henry VII, King of England, and granddaughter of Mary Tudor, widow of Louis XII, Jeanne Gray was chosen as successor by Edward VI, who excluded his half-sisters Mary and Elizabeth I from the succession to prevent Mary the Catholic from ascending the throne. However, the young queen was quickly ousted by her cousin Mary, who had her locked up in the Tower of London. Well aware that Joan had been manipulated by John Dudley, Mary initially wished to spare her. She nevertheless had her executed for her alleged involvement in a plot, and because of the revolt led by her father, the Duke of Suffolk.
Lady Jeanne, despite her very young age at the time of her death, had already been recognized by her contemporaries as "a lady of good repute". Indeed, she is described by historian Alison Weir as "one of the most erudite female minds of the 16th century".
Normal wear to frames, no breaks or chips.
