Product description
Set of six red Bohemian crystal flute glasses, made in the 1970s. Diameter 6.5 cm, height 18 cm. Bohemian crystal is a decorative glass produced in Bohemia since the 18th century. This land is famous for the production of colored glass objects, thanks to the abundant natural resources present in the territory. Bohemian glassmakers discovered that by mixing potassium chloride and gypsum, a clear, colorless glass could be obtained. Bohemia began to produce expert artisans capable of artfully working the crystal, which became famous for its excellent cut. Vases were produced in single opaque colors or two-tone. The artifacts were finely decorated with enameled floral motifs, while others were adorned with colored lithographic prints. Bohemian crystal differs from normal glass due to its lead content, which makes the glass more elastic, softer, and easier to work with. The very high percentage of lead makes Bohemian crystal particularly heavy and allows light to refract in an absolutely unique way. The marvel of Bohemian crystal is enhanced in an intoxicating play of colors and reflections with lamps and chandeliers. Their characteristic is that they are made entirely of glass and feature pendants of various shapes. Every element is handcrafted by master glassmakers. To obtain small objects, the blowing method is commonly used, which is divided into two techniques: free-blowing or mold-blowing. In both cases, the glass is brought to its melting point. One processing technique is the cylinder method; it consists of rotating a quantity of molten glass until a cylinder approximately 50 cm long is obtained, whose two ends will be cut off. It is then incised with a diamond tip and transferred to an oven. It is opened like a book to obtain a sheet. Once reheated, it is worked to give it the desired shape. Feet or a pedestal can also be added to the object. Another processing technique is the mechanical one, performed with the aid of machines or with the manual intervention of the artisan in some particular phases.
