Product description
A very special set of four sculptural wrought-iron garden chairs, likely French and dating from the mid-20th century, circa 1950.
These chairs stand out due to their expressive and architectural construction. The seat and backrest are formed by a radial arrangement of flat iron slats, creating an enveloping, basket-like structure that encloses the user. The composition spreads outwards in a dynamic, almost corolla-like movement, giving the chairs a strong sculptural appearance from every angle.
The armrests are particularly striking: they consist of a series of curved metal bands forming open cylindrical spirals and introduce a rare volumetric element that distinguishes these chairs from more conventional wrought-iron garden furniture. This detail suggests a deliberate and confident design approach rather than purely utilitarian manufacture.
Unlike most garden chairs from that period, the seat is subtly tilted backwards, creating a more relaxed, lounge-like seating position. This ergonomic slope enhances comfort while simultaneously reinforcing the enveloping, almost armchair-like character of the design. The chairs are thus positioned somewhere between outdoor furniture and sculptural seating.
The slender, slightly splayed legs form a visual contrast with the expressive upper structure, keeping the composition grounded while simultaneously retaining a sense of lightness characteristic of mid-20th century design.
Each chair has retained multiple historical paint layers, with traces of an earlier dark green finish visible beneath later white layers. Through decades of outdoor use, including oxidation, paint loss, and weathering, the surfaces have developed a rich and textured patina. This authentic surface condition contributes significantly to their character and visual depth.
Although not attributed to a specific designer, but clearly designed with a strong formal intent, these chairs can be placed within the broader context of mid-20th century French wrought iron, where industrial production is balanced with sculptural experimentation.
