This furniture ensemble is an iconic dining room set design by the Italian architects and designers Afra and Tobia Scarpa from 1973, consisting of six so-called "Monk" chairs and a matching extendable dining table.
Designed for the renowned Italian manufacturer Molteni, the series is now considered a classic of Italian modernism.
The chairs are characterized by a radically minimalist yet striking design language. The construction consists of a solid beechwood frame with a strong rectangular cross-section. The seat and backrest are made of taut, black full-grain leather, which is attached to the frame with visible screws. The characteristic tension in the leather ensures ergonomic seating comfort without the need for additional padding.
The flat lines and slightly splayed legs give the chairs a sculptural effect that remains understated and functional. The visible screws are not a technical necessity but rather deliberately designed elements that emphasize the industrial character of the design.
The matching table is made of solid wood and was designed to perfectly complement the chairs, both formally and materially. The legs are positioned at the outer corners of the table, providing ample legroom and emphasizing the clean geometry of the design. The tabletop features a central seam, allowing the table to be extended using a synchronized pull-out mechanism.
The extension is achieved via two leaves stored beneath the tabletop. The wood grain is finely textured throughout, crafted from solid beechwood with a warm-toned lacquer finish.
Condition: The set is in very good condition. The leather upholstery of the chairs shows minimal, age-related creases and slight wear to the sheen, but no cracks, discoloration, or damage, only minor scratches. The wooden frames of both pieces of furniture are sturdy and visually well-preserved, with only very minor signs of use, such as small scratches or dents on the lower parts of the legs. The table's extension mechanism appears to be fully functional and complete. Overall, this is a well-maintained, fully functional set with clearly documented design origins and high-quality craftsmanship.
