Pair of modernist chairs by the pioneer of Carioca design Sérgio Rodrigues, in ebonized beech wood covered in velvet. The chairs synthesize a unique combination of Shaker, De Stijl and Japanese influences. Rodrigues reinterprets them through a distinctly Brazilian lens that favors indigenous Woodlands and refuses to sacrifice well-being on the altar of design, instead using comfort as a guide for the evolution of a new style. The extra-high triangular curved backrest, which comfortably supports the body, culminates in a sculptural headrest reminiscent of Edo period takamakura. It hinges on a geometric frame that narrows between the front and rear legs to form a trapezoid, highlighting the negative space between the diagonal stretchers and culminating in the hyper-cut legs. These elegant chairs are unique among Rodrigues' works for their lightness and elongated vertical proportions.
The chairs have the original but worn upholstery, a new upholstery is recommended. The wooden part is in good condition.
