This ceramic catchall dish takes us back to the extraordinary creative freedom that animated Vallauris during the 1960s and 1970s. Ceramics then readily moved from the dining table to adorn consoles, bookshelves, and coffee tables. Shapes became free-flowing, glazes bolder, and everyday objects gradually took on the appearance of small sculptures. This is precisely what makes this piece so charming. Its asymmetrical silhouette unfolds in a particularly elegant movement. The dish gradually stretches before rising into a long, curved end, almost as if drawn with a single stroke. One can see in it a folded leaf, a wave, a horn, or simply that organic abstraction so characteristic of 1960s-1970s taste. The glaze work is remarkable. Deep browns mingle with ochre and amber yellow tones, interspersed with spectacular cream and pearl grey crystallizations. The firing process created irregular branching patterns that evoke foam, feathers, or certain mineral formations. Light catches these different textures and successively reveals the nuances of the glaze. It is also a true catchall, designed to live in an interior space. On a console in an entryway, on a dresser top to hold jewelry and small objects, or on a coffee table alongside beautiful books and a smoked glass vase. In the post-war decades, Vallauris experienced a period of remarkable effervescence. Ceramists there experimented with shapes, clays, glazes, and firing techniques, giving birth to an entire generation of objects where the line between utility and decoration deliberately blurred.
