Leonor Fini was one of the most prominent and flamboyant figures of the Surrealist movement, alongside artists such as Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo, Jacqueline Lamba, Dorothea Tanning, Meret Oppenheim, Dora Maar, and Claude Lalanne.
Many consider her one of the most fiercely independent female artists of the 20th century. By the age of 17, she already possessed a solid knowledge of Renaissance art and Mannerist painting.
In 1931, at just 24 years old, Fini moved to Paris, where she met influential artists such as Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carrà. She also met the Surrealist pioneer Max Ernst, with whom she had a romantic relationship and who introduced her to other members of the movement.
Her work and flamboyant personality attracted the attention of many major 20th-century artists, writers, and intellectuals, including Salvador Dalí, Jean Cocteau, Albert Camus, and Jean Genet.
She exhibited in numerous Parisian galleries, notably that of Christian Dior, before he became the renowned couturier we know today, as well as alongside major gallerists and collectors such as Leo Castelli and Peggy Guggenheim.
