Product description
An elegant gravy boat with its underplate made of Bavarian porcelain, from the Schumann manufactory in Arzberg, a historic German porcelain house whose origins date back to the late 19th century. Founded in Arzberg in 1881, the Schumann manufactory is part of the history of this region of Bavaria, which became one of Germany's great porcelain centers. Over the generations, the house developed a production particularly renowned for its table porcelain, combining manufacturing quality, refined decorations, and forms inspired by great European styles. This gravy boat, accompanied by its matching and removable underplate, belongs to a production from the 1960s-1970s. The reverse retains the characteristic manufactory mark, adorned with a crown and the Bavarian lion crest, accompanied by the inscriptions "Bavaria – Schumann – Arzberg." The porcelain features a beautiful, particularly warm ivory tone, enhanced by a delicate scattering of small polychrome bouquets. Roses, blue, orange, yellow, and violet florets punctuate both the gravy boat and its underplate, in the tradition of floral decorations that contributed to the renown of Bavarian porcelains. The form is particularly elaborate. The generous body features a molded relief decoration of rocaille inspiration, made of curves, shells, and flowing movements. The long spout rises elegantly, while the handle, designed as a large volute, naturally extends this composition. Fine gilded lines highlight the contours, the upper rim, the handle, and the scalloped edge of the underplate. The underplate is not attached to the gravy boat. A true matching piece, it allows the gravy boat to be presented at the table while collecting any drips during serving, in accordance with the traditional use of this type of piece in tableware. The set reaches approximately 11 cm in height, and the underplate measures approximately 22 cm in length. These proportions give it a beautiful presence, as attractive today on a set table as it is repurposed as a decorative object in a display cabinet or a collection of antique porcelains. The set is preserved in very good condition. The porcelain remains shiny, the floral decorations are fresh, and the gilding remains beautifully present. No cracks or chips are noted.
