Scailmont Art Deco Spotted Glass Vase, Belgium, c. 1930s
A rare and beautifully decorative Art Deco vase by the Belgian Scailmont glassworks, dating from the 1930s.
The vase is crafted in sophisticated double-layered glass, with an interior of milky-white opaline and an outer layer featuring an intricate spotted glass pattern in delicate rose-pink tones with deeper burgundy accents. The unusual pink coloration is particularly beautiful when illuminated, revealing the depth and complexity of the layered glass.
Its rounded body, narrow waist and elegantly flared rim create a distinctive sculptural Art Deco silhouette. Standing 19 cm high, it is a rare and highly collectible example of Belgian interwar glassmaking.
Nearly a century old, the vase nevertheless feels remarkably contemporary and would sit beautifully even in a modern interior — a decorative object with history, character and timeless appeal.
Scailmont glass (Verreries de Scailmont) in Belgium, is renowned for its exquisite Art Deco and Art Nouveau designs. Founded by Henri-Raphaël Hirsch, (who had established the “Saint-Laurent Glassworks” a few years earlier) in 1901 in Manage, the factory specialized in molded and satin-finished glassware, featuring intricate etching, enameling, and sandblasting techniques. Collaborations with renowned designers such as Henri Heemskerk and Charles Catteau brought international acclaim, particularly after the 1925 Paris Exposition.
Scailmont’s products, including vases and tableware, were often marked with the factory’s name or designer signatures, making them highly collectible. The company also partnered with brands like Boch Frères and Val-Saint-Lambert.
Despite industry challenges, Scailmont remained a key player in Belgium’s glass industry until it merged with Durobor in 1976 and ceased operations in 2000. Today, Scailmont glass is prized for its elegant designs and fine craftsmanship.
