Satsuma-style covered porcelain box, square shape with rounded corners. Polychrome decoration with gilded highlights on a mahogany brown background. Dimensions 9 x 9 cm, height 4.5 cm with lid closed. The lid is adorned with three Buddhist deities with white halos, depicted in bust on a brown background punctuated by golden dots and a scale pattern. In the center, Kannon (観音, goddess of compassion), with an elaborate hairstyle adorned with a floral diadem, holding a pearlescent wisdom pearl. Wearing a dark green jacket with orange floral motifs and a blue sash. Above her, a white medallion featuring a manji (卍), a Buddhist swastika symbolizing eternity and good omen. To the left, a Rakan (arhat), an elderly man with a bald head, bushy eyebrows, an austere and meditative expression, wearing a burgundy brown robe with green motifs. To the right, a second Rakan, an elderly man with pronounced features and white hair, wearing a vivid orange robe with green motifs. The three figures are rendered with meticulous care, their faces expressive, their garments richly detailed with raised brown beads. The sides of the box and lid are decorated with a seigaiha (青海波) pattern, golden fish-scale waves on a brown background, with raised green clouds. This pattern, one of the most emblematic in Japanese ceramics, symbolizes peace and prosperity. Gilded borders on all edges. Plain white enameled interior. White base with a workshop mark in iron-red, cursive Japanese characters (attribution to be confirmed). Satsuma style refers to Japanese ceramics with a finely crackled cream glaze, adorned with highly refined polychrome and gilded decorations. Originally produced in the Satsuma province (Kyushu) since the 17th century, this style experienced considerable growth during the Meiji ( ) and Taisho ( ) periods, when Japanese workshops produced for export to Europe and America. Pieces decorated with Buddhist deities on a brown background are among the most sought after by collectors. Very good condition, gilding well preserved. To be placed on a desk, in a cabinet of curiosities, or in an Asian art collection.
