At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Sarreguemines was among the great names in French faience. The factory was by no means limited to tableware at the time. It developed a whole repertoire of decorative ceramics where molded forms, reliefs, and especially the richness of the glazes allowed the workshops to express a remarkable mastery of color. This large slipware cachepot, bearing the SARREGUEMINES mark impressed on its base, along with its mold number, fully belongs to this decorative world of the turn of the century. Its generous silhouette is punctuated by deep vertical ribs that give the material an almost architectural movement. Light glides over these reliefs, progressively revealing the full richness of the glazing. The upper part is adorned with a deep, luminous red, almost oxblood in places, before revealing shades of cobalt blue, petrol blue, and dark green. Inside, a superb turquoise glaze, traversed by fine crazing that gives it that depth so characteristic of old ceramics. The glazes are never perfectly uniform. They blend, darken, and meet according to the contours of the reliefs, making each side slightly different. It is precisely this interplay of material and firing that gives old slipware its character and distinguishes it from later decorative productions. With its approximately 25 cm in diameter and 18 cm in height, it possesses very beautiful proportions. Large enough to accommodate a generous plant, it can just as well be kept as a decorative piece in its own right. On an antique piece of furniture, a console, or amidst a more contemporary interior, its colors have an extraordinary presence. A particularly alluring piece of Sarreguemines' decorative production, still marked by the Art Nouveau spirit and the turn-of-the-20th-century taste for organic forms, color, and textural effects. Circa . The cachepot is in beautiful general condition for its age. There is a fine, old hairline crack originating from the rim, discreet and without loss, visible in the photographs. It does not detract from the remarkable decorative presence of the piece as a whole.
