This platter makes an immediate impression. The deep cobalt blue of the Capri pattern brilliantly contrasts with the pure white of the faience, creating that crisp and luminous contrast that is the hallmark of major French manufacturers from the interwar period. On the wide rim, a continuous frieze of large, blooming roses unfolds all around the platter. The flowers, rendered with remarkable precision by transfer printing, alternate with bouquets of finely detailed foliage. Along the outer edge, a dark blue geometric trellis frieze frames the entire piece with the characteristic rigor of the Art Deco style of the 1920s-1930s. The center, an immaculate white, allows the light to play freely.
The Sarreguemines manufactory, founded in 1790 in Moselle, is one of the oldest and most prestigious French faience factories. In the 19th century, it expanded to Digoin and became a major player in European production. During the 1920s-1930s, it developed intense cobalt blue patterns, influenced by Art Deco trends and the vogue for blue and white designs. The Capri pattern is one of the most accomplished from this period. The blue shield stamp on the reverse, bearing the inscription "Sarreguemines et Digoin France," accurately dates the piece.
With its 33 cm diameter, this platter has a considerable presence. Displayed in an open china cabinet, it catches the light and the eye. On a carefully set table, it becomes the centerpiece around which everything else is arranged. The cobalt blue harmonizes beautifully with white linen, antique silverware, and blown glass. Very good condition, with some light signs of use on the reverse, and an impeccable front surface.
