It happens that time separates objects. It also happens that a glance offers them a new encounter. 20eSiècle presents here a decorative composition bringing together two authentic antique earthenware pieces from the Sarreguemines Faience Factories: a jug and a basin from another model by the manufacturer. Originally, these two pieces did not belong to the same set. Yet, I chose to reunite them, convinced that their dialogue today is stronger than their differences.
Founded in 1778, the Sarreguemines Faience Factories are among the most prestigious French manufacturers. From the 19th century onwards, their creations crossed borders and captivated a demanding clientele with the finesse of their printed decorations, the quality of their earthenware, and the elegance of their forms. Wash sets then held an essential place in the bedrooms of bourgeois residences, family homes, and private mansions, long before running water transformed daily habits.
The jug features a delicate blue printed floral decoration, characteristic of the manufacturer's productions in the late 19th century. The basin, from a different decor, belongs to the same period and shares the same quality of execution, the same tones, and the same refinement. Although born from different collections, these two elements today form a harmonious ensemble that naturally recreates the atmosphere of interiors from that era. In the past, objects accompanied families for several generations. They were kept, replaced, and associated differently through inheritances and moves. This reunion is part of that continuity, with the respect due to their history.
These two pieces naturally bear the marks of a long existence. They show old cracks, chips, age-related crazing, and traces of use, visible in the photographs. Far from being hidden, these imperfections are embraced; they bear witness to over a century of life and remind us that these objects have passed through ages before reaching us. Due to this state of preservation, this set is subject to a significant discount compared to the value of a Sarreguemines wash set preserved in excellent condition. This choice makes it possible today to acquire two authentic antique earthenware pieces at a particularly accessible price, without detracting from their decorative power or their heritage value.
Placed in a characterful bathroom, an antique bedroom, a country house, or an interior inspired by old residences, this composition naturally finds its place. It evokes a vanished art of living, where every object was designed to last, be passed down, and accompany daily life with elegance. More than a century after their creation, these two earthenware pieces meet again in a composition imagined by 20eSiècle. They no longer tell only their individual story; they now write a new one, where harmony prevails over origin, and where the charm of time becomes their most beautiful signature.
