This is an intriguing screen print by contemporary artist Sara van der Heide, also known as Sara Sejin Chang. The work is part of a series titled “We The Dutch First Part” (2005). Through her layered painting technique, restrained brushwork, and use of color, Van der Heide’s references to these everyday images acquire a timeless character—as if she wishes to give current events a place in eternity—while simultaneously remaining powerful, colorful images. Amidst all the reinterpretations of modernist and romantic themes that dominate contemporary painting, Van der Heide’s work occupies a unique place. Through her subtle, layered scenes, which reveal themselves to the viewer only gradually, the artist comments on her immediate surroundings and transforms these everyday observations into slightly unsettling, timeless images.
