The self-taught Sam Maloof was an American carpenter and furniture designer, best known for his artfully crafted, sculptural rocking chairs and organically shaped furniture pieces. His work combines traditional craftsmanship with a modernist aesthetic, and he is considered one of the most important American artisans of the 20th century.
His rocking chairs are now cult objects, exhibited in various renowned American museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The rocking chair is part of the White House inventory and was also privately owned by U.S. Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan.
Maloof received the prestigious MacArthur Genius Grant in 1985, making him the first craftsman ever to receive this award.
Sam Maloof published plans and instructions for replicating his most famous designs in his 2006 book "Designing and Building Chairs (New Best of Fine Woodworking)." Nevertheless, high-quality replicas like this one offered here are very rare.
