Safari Chair by Danish designer Kaare Klint. Purchased at the design store Diito in Brussels in October 2019. The armchair remained unwrapped for several years. I've had it in my home for two years now, but I hardly use it. It not only looks like new, it feels like new in every way. You can expect this armchair without a single stain or sign of wear. The safari chair is no longer offered in teak by Carl Hansen & Son.
The accompanying cushion alone is priced at €340. This cushion is in excellent condition.
The KK47000 Safari Chair by Kaare Klint is a refinement of the chairs an American cinematographer and his wife took on safari in Africa. Klint saw them in photographs of the couple. They were likely based on Indian Roorkhee chairs used by the British army—possibly the first examples of self-assembly furniture. The original featured glueless joints, could be assembled without tools, and had an intelligent construction that tightened the joints as the chair was used, enhancing its strength and stability. Klint focused on simplifying, clarifying, and refining the armchair's composition and presented his final design for the Safari Chair in 1933 at the Copenhagen Furniture Makers' Guild Exhibition. Although inspired by its British predecessor, Klint's refined, lightweight chair is characterized by his characteristic systematic approach, craftsmanship, well-considered proportions, and remarkable material effects.
Architect Kaare Klint (1888-1954) was a figurehead of Danish design and, with his unique understanding of proportion, laid the foundation for the Danish modern concept. Throughout his career, during which he created a series of iconic, design-driven products, he maintained a clear, logical design and a distinctive style, utilizing exquisite materials and superb craftsmanship.
