- Early work: 1913 is a key moment. Jespers is on the verge of making the leap to Expressionism. This work is a historical document of that transition, considerably rarer than his later, African-inspired work.
• Large format: 65 × 115 cm is exceptional for an early Jespers.
• Recent exhibition status: the work was exhibited in the 2025–2026 Zigzag exhibition at Campo & Campo, one of the most respected Belgian art houses. This is a mark of quality.
• Subject: Rupelmonde is a historically charged Flemish place (Mercator was born there). The topographical title enhances the emotional and local appeal.
