Lichtenstein's use of black dots in this work gives the canvas the appearance of being still wet and therefore distorted. Ben-Day dots were an integral technique Lichtenstein employed in his artistic production.
Deviating from his usual subject matter, this work focuses on the essence of painting: the brushstrokes themselves. Lichtenstein's signature style, combining precise lines and flat colors, was applied here to create a dynamic and exaggerated brushstroke. He explained: "Brushstrokes in a painting convey a sense of grand gesture; but in my hands, the brushstroke becomes an image of a grand gesture."
