Rosewood Magazine Table, Denmark, 1960s
This Danish magazine table combines two everyday functions within a remarkably restrained design. A square rosewood tabletop appears to float inside a solid rosewood frame, while beneath it hangs a suspended canvas sling that provides generous storage for magazines, newspapers or books. The result is a piece that feels both practical and sculptural, equally suited as a side table beside a sofa or lounge chair.
The construction is beautifully balanced. Four slender square legs support a clean architectural frame, allowing the rich rosewood grain to take centre stage. The tabletop is bookmatched with warm reddish-brown tones and dramatic dark figuring, while the solid rosewood frame subtly emphasises the clean geometry of the design. Every joint is neatly executed, reflecting the understated craftsmanship associated with Danish cabinetmaking of the period.
The suspended magazine holder introduces a softer contrast to the timber. Made from heavy woven canvas, it hangs naturally between the rails and is secured by turned rosewood pegs wrapped in matching canvas loops. The gentle curve of the sling breaks the otherwise rectilinear form, giving the table a distinctive character without compromising its simplicity.
Pieces like this demonstrate how Danish designers approached even the most functional household objects with careful attention to proportion, material and detail. Compact in size yet generous in usability, it remains as relevant today as when it was first produced.
