Pair of turquoise-glazed porcelain vases from the “Windmill” series, designed by Dutch ceramic artist Jan Van Der Vaart for Rosenthal Studio-Line in 1988.
The duo comprises a broad, compact vase and a taller, narrower interpretation of the same geometric design. Curved cylindrical sections are intersected by vertical fins, while the divided openings create a subtle impression of rotation. The glossy turquoise glaze emphasizes the changing relationship between curved surfaces, projecting edges and recessed areas.
Jan Van Der Vaart was an important figure in postwar Dutch ceramics and taught at Amsterdam’s Gerrit Rietveld Academie. His work combined functional use with precise geometric form and was strongly influenced by De Stijl.
The vases create a particularly balanced arrangement when displayed together but also work individually, either empty or with a few flower stems.
