Studio-Linie, Germany, 1974–1975
This refined pair of porcelain vases was designed by Bjørn Wiinblad for Rosenthal’s celebrated Studio-Linie, presenting two closely related interpretations of Wiinblad’s sculptural relief language in white porcelain.
Both pieces demonstrate Wiinblad’s sensitivity to surface, rhythm, and tactility, translated through Rosenthal’s exceptional porcelain craftsmanship. Though similar in spirit, the vases differ subtly in proportion, finish, and production year—making them particularly compelling when viewed together.
Design & Material
Each vase features a softly modeled relief structure that wraps the body in a continuous, flowing rhythm—almost textile in character. The sculptural surface reads differently depending on light and viewing angle, emphasizing Wiinblad’s background as an illustrator and scenographer.
* Vase I (1974)
Executed in satin-finished white porcelain, this example has a velvety, matte presence with a calm, architectural clarity. Marked *Zweite Wahl*, indicating a minor factory grading—without structural defects.
* Vase II (1975)
Produced a year later, this version combines glossy and matte porcelain surfaces, creating a subtle dialogue between light reflection and relief depth. The contrast enhances the sculptural quality of the form while remaining characteristically restrained.
About the Designer
Bjørn Wiinblad (1918–2006) was one of Denmark’s most influential artists and designers, celebrated for his lyrical, imaginative visual language. While widely known for his decorative and figurative work, his collaborations with Rosenthal reveal a more sculptural and pared-back dimension of his practice—where ornament becomes structure and surface becomes form.
