Rosenthal Studio-Line “Spirit” Vase Duo – White Glossy Porcelain by Robin Platt & Cairn Young – Free Spirit Collection, ca. 1999
Contemporary Sculptural Porcelain with Museum Recognition
Elevate your design collection with this iconic duo from Rosenthal Studio-Line’s “Free Spirit” series, designed by the acclaimed British team Robin Platt and Cairn Young. Produced in Germany circa 1999, these vases exemplify the innovative edge of late-20th-century porcelain: sculptural, dynamic, and deeply refined.
Each vase is cast in high-gloss porcelain in brilliant white, accentuating their signature Y-shaped silhouette. The design bridges biomorphic fluidity and architectural precision, resulting in a pair of functional art objects that stand out in any modern interior.

Design Significance
The “Spirit” design reflects the experimental formal language of the 1990s, where object design was shaped as much by sculpture and digital architecture as by traditional tableware. The result is a poetic, almost anatomical form—expressive yet utilitarian.
Robin Platt, trained at the London College of Furniture, won the Gordon Russell Trust Award in 1988 and was named “New Designer of the Year” in 1989. Cairn Young, educated at the Central School of Art and Kingston University, has worked in tandem with Platt since 1991. Their work—ranging from tableware to product and spatial design—is known for its tactile intelligence and formal wit.
These vases are more than decorative: they are part of design history. A version of the “Spirit” vase is held in the permanent collection of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, underlining its importance in contemporary ceramic design.
