Rosenthal Studio-Linie Sculptural Vase Duo
Design: Martin Freyer
Germany · 1960s–1970s · Bisque Porcelain Relief
A rare and architecturally compelling pair of bisque porcelain vases designed by Martin Freyer for Rosenthal Studio-Linie during his influential collaboration with the manufactory (1964–1974).
Executed in matte white bisque porcelain with glossy interiors, the two vases form a powerful sculptural dialogue. Together they represent one of the most intellectually rigorous moments in postwar German porcelain design — where Op Art, relief structure, and Brutalist surface language converged.
Design & Artistic Context/
Op Art in Three Dimensions
Freyer translated the principles of Op Art — optical tension, rhythm, and perceptual movement — into sculptural porcelain. Rather than relying on printed geometry, he achieved visual dynamism through deeply structured relief surfaces.
The vertical modulation creates shifting light-and-shadow effects depending on viewing angle. The relief oscillates between geometric discipline and organic erosion, giving the objects an almost architectural presence.
These are not decorative vessels in the conventional sense — they are spatial objects that interact with light.
The Duo:
Vase I
Height: 25 cm
Material: Bisque porcelain
Finish: Matte white exterior, glossy interior
Marking: Rosenthal Studio-Linie stamp
A rectangular silhouette with undulating relief structure. The tactile surface absorbs light, emphasizing depth and sculptural rhythm.
Vase II (XL)
Height: 33 cm
Width: approx. 13 cm
Depth: approx. 11 cm
Material: Bisque porcelain
Finish: Matte white exterior, glossy interior
Marking: Rosenthal Studio-Linie with golden “S” logo
A taller architectural counterpart with pronounced vertical articulation. The relief appears more dramatic at this scale, enhancing the Brutalist undertone of the design.
Material & Surface
Material: Porcelain
Surface: Matte bisque exterior, glazed interior
The unglazed exterior emphasizes texture and relief, while the glossy interior creates a subtle material contrast. This duality was characteristic of Rosenthal’s experimental Studio-Linie period.
Condition
Both vases are in very good to excellent vintage condition.
Minor age-appropriate traces consistent with careful handling.
No chips, cracks, or repairs.
About the Designer
Martin Freyer (1909–1975) was a multidisciplinary German designer and artist. Beyond his porcelain work, he is associated with graphic and industrial design projects and was active in stage and visual arts contexts.
His collaboration with Rosenthal between 1964 and 1974 produced some of the most structurally innovative Studio-Linie relief designs. Freyer approached porcelain not as a decorative surface but as a medium for spatial experimentation — aligning his work with the intellectual currents of Op Art and late modernist abstraction.
Why This Pair Matters
* Authentic Rosenthal Studio-Linie production
* Important 1960s–1970s German design
* Sculptural interpretation of Op Art in porcelain
* Strong architectural presence as a matched duo
* Increasingly collectible Studio-Linie works
Displayed together, the two heights create a compelling proportional relationship — almost columnar in presence — ideal for architectural interiors, curated modernist spaces, or serious postwar design collections.
A rare opportunity to acquire a cohesive pair from one of Rosenthal’s most experimental decades.
