Offered here is a refined duo of sculptural porcelain vases designed by Martin Freyer for Rosenthal Studio-Linie, representing two distinct moments within his long and influential collaboration with the manufactory. Though produced sixteen years apart, the vases form a compelling dialogue through geometry, relief, and Freyer’s characteristic transformation of porcelain into architectural sculpture.
Design & Form
Both vases exemplify Freyer’s sculptural approach to porcelain, where surface, structure, and volume are inseparable. Rather than decorative pattern, relief becomes a structural language—engraved, pressed, and modulated to guide light and shadow across matte white porcelain.
Vase I – Model 2920/19 (1968)
A compact, square-based form with restrained proportions and rhythmic vertical articulation. The relief is subtle and architectural, emphasizing clarity, balance, and material discipline. This early design reflects Freyer’s late-1960s work, when he explored the boundary between vessel and sculptural object with particular rigor.
Vase II – Model 3065/22 “Fossil” (1984)
Taller and more expressive, this vase features Freyer’s later Fossil relief language—organic, layered, and tactile. The surface evokes geological strata or natural erosion, introducing a more gestural and material-driven expression while retaining strict formal control. The relief reads differently from every angle, animated by the soft absorption of light in the matte porcelain.

Matte surfaces clean and well preserved.
The Zweite Wahl marking on the 1984 vase does not detract from its sculptural presence and is consistent with Rosenthal factory practice.
About the Designer – Martin Freyer (1909–1975)
Martin Freyer was one of the most important sculptural voices within Rosenthal Studio-Linie. Trained as a painter and sculptor, he collaborated with Rosenthal from the mid-1960s onward, redefining porcelain as a medium of architectural and tactile experimentation. His designs are characterized by disciplined geometry, rhythmic relief, and an intellectual rigor rooted in postwar modernism.
