Turquoise Glazed Porcelain with Black Op-Art Pattern
Op Art in Turquoise: Precision, Rhythm, Repetition
This rare and visually arresting Rosenthal Studio-Line ensemble consists of two vases and a lidded box designed by Theo Baumann in the mid-1960s — a period in which Rosenthal became a European epicenter of graphic modernism.
Gone is the gold opulence of earlier Studio-Line pieces. Here, geometry becomes rhythm. Pattern becomes structure.
The glossy turquoise glaze serves as a luminous ground for Baumann’s intricate black graphic decor — a precisely screen-applied pattern of repeating ovals, linear ribs, and stylized geometric medallions. The motif wraps each form continuously, transforming the objects into cylindrical fields of optical vibration.
This is porcelain as visual architecture.
The Ensemble
1. Tall Cylindrical Vase (Model 30) – 1965
Height: 30.5 cm
Opening diameter: approx. 8.5 cm
A slender vertical statement piece. The elongated proportions amplify the rhythmic repetition of the decor, creating a powerful Op-Art presence. The long neck contrasts elegantly with the denser patterned body.
2. Bottle-Form Vase (Model 18) – 1964
Height: 18 cm
Width: approx. 13.5 cm
Opening diameter: approx. 6 cm
A more compact, architectural silhouette with a strong shoulder and narrowed neck. The rounded body gives the geometric decor a sculptural tension — pattern bending over curvature.
3. Lidded Box (Model 4084) – 1964
Height: 15.5 cm
Diameter: approx. 10.5 cm
A rare and highly collectible companion piece. The domed lid with spherical finial continues the graphic motif seamlessly, demonstrating Rosenthal’s technical mastery in pattern alignment across multiple components.
About Theo Baumann
Theo Baumann (1924–2016) was one of the most important Swiss-German industrial designers of the postwar period. Known for his purist, architectural sensibility, Baumann translated graphic systems into functional objects with extraordinary precision.
His collaboration with Rosenthal Studio-Line in the 1960s reflects:
• Systematic repetition
• Graphic clarity
• Modular logic
• Bauhaus-influenced restraint
• Op-Art sensibility without illusionism
Unlike designers who relied on organic form, Baumann treated porcelain as a surface for disciplined visual order. The result is decorative art that feels almost architectural.
Design Context
The mid-1960s marked Rosenthal’s bold shift toward international modernism. Under the Studio-Line program, the company invited avant-garde designers to rethink porcelain as contemporary design object rather than traditional tableware.
This turquoise-and-black graphic series embodies that spirit:
• Vivid color experimentation
• Screen-printed geometric precision
• Op-Art influence
• High-gloss surface tension
Together, the trio forms a cohesive sculptural vignette — unified by color, diversified by form.
