Rosenthal Studio Line – “Kontiki” by Nanny Still (1993)
Carafe (37 cm) & Lidded Box (21 cm) · Mouth-blown art glass · Germany
A vivid duo from Rosenthal’s celebrated Studio Line, this “Kontiki” pair captures the unmistakable hand and imagination of Nanny Still (1926–2009), one of the great colour alchemists of European postwar glass design. Created in 1993, Kontiki is a joyful exercise in controlled exuberance: fiery orange, citrus yellow, lacquer-black spirals, and the unmistakable emerald-green finial — a sculptural flourish that feels almost ceremonial.
The Carafe – 37 cm
A tall, elongated body shifting from warm yellow to burning orange, crowned by a detachable stopper in leaf-green glass. The black spiral brushwork wraps the lower section like a rhythm of smoke or calligraphy.
(Note: height without stopper 25.5 cm.)
The Lidded Box – 21 cm
A generously rounded container, glowing in the same chromatic spectrum. Its domed red lid — with a green sculptural handle — feels almost like a piece of fantastical fruit.
(Note: height without lid 11.5 cm; small chip on the inner rim of the lid, see lant photo close-up.)
Both pieces are made of hand-blown cased glass, showcasing Studio Line’s fusion of craft precision and artistic experimentation.
About the Designer – Nanny Still (Finland)
Nanny Still was one of Finland’s most influential glass designers, part of the golden era of mid-century Scandinavian design, yet always distinctly her own: playful, daring with colour, endlessly curious about form and technique. Although famous for her long tenure at Riihimäki Glassworks, Still collaborated with a number of European manufacturers — and her partnership with Rosenthal in the 1980s–90s stands out for its bold chromatic vocabulary and sculptural ambition.
Still treated colour not as surface decoration but as substance, almost as if she were painting with molten light. The Kontiki series reflects her fascination with tropical motifs, volcanic palettes, and layered optical effects.
About the Manufacture – Rosenthal Studio Line
Launched in 1961, Rosenthal’s Studio Line was conceived as a platform where the world’s most progressive designers and artists could experiment freely with new forms, techniques, and materials. Names like Tapio Wirkkala, Bjørn Wiinblad, Eduardo Paolozzi, and Nanny Still transformed the line into an avant-garde laboratory.
By the early 1990s, Rosenthal had perfected a form of cross-disciplinary glass production: meticulous German technical standards combined with the artistic vision of international designers. Kontiki is a perfect artefact from this era — bold, joyous, and unafraid of theatrical colour.
