Rosenthal Studio-Line “Baobab” Duo – Design by Emmanuel Babled (France/Italy), ca. 2000s
A visionary sculptural ensemble from the Rosenthal studio-line, this porcelain duo—comprising a tall, organically tapered vase and a deep, flaring bowl—is part of the rare Baobab series by acclaimed French-born designer Emmanuel Babled. Marked by its fluid, biomorphic silhouettes and impeccable glossy white finish, the set is a testament to Rosenthal’s avant-garde spirit and Babled’s poetic exploration of form and function.
The Baobab series takes its name and conceptual inspiration from the majestic African tree, evoking ideas of balance, rootedness, and graceful vertical expansion. Both the vase and the bowl radiate a calm sensuality, reduced to their essential volumes: the vase rising like a stem from a droplet, and the bowl flaring like a corolla frozen in motion. These are not merely decorative objects—they are spatial statements.
Emmanuel Babled (b. 1967) trained in Milan and has since forged a highly regarded international career with works spanning furniture, lighting, glass, and porcelain. His practice, deeply influenced by both digital innovation and traditional craftsmanship, is grounded in a philosophy of “slow design”—where each object is distilled to a quiet clarity, balancing emotion and proportion. He has collaborated with major design houses such as Venini, Baccarat, and Rosenthal, and his works are held in permanent collections such as the V&A Museum in London and Centre Pompidou in Paris.
Rosenthal’s studio-line, launched in the 1960s under the direction of Philip Rosenthal, became a platform for design radicalism—welcoming visionaries like Tapio Wirkkala, Mario Bellini, and Walter Gropius. Babled’s Baobab stands as one of the studio-line’s late triumphs, blending digital-era minimalism with tactile softness.
Both pieces bear the Rosenthal studio-line mark with Babled’s signature.
