Rosenthal Studio-Line
“Lamina Rot” Vase & Box Trio
Décor: Helmut Drexler
Germany, 1970–1973
Satin porcelain with metallic lamina glaze
A rare and visually commanding Rosenthal Studio-Line trio in the highly sought-after “Lamina Rot” décor by Helmut Drexler.
This set comprises two vases and a lidded box from the early 1970s — a pivotal period in which Drexler transformed porcelain surface into a field of metallic experimentation.
The Lamina series is among the most expressive finishes produced by Rosenthal during this era.
The Ensemble
1. Cylindrical Vase (1970)
Height: 16 cm
Diameter: 6 cm
A strict, architectural cylinder — pure verticality. The uninterrupted surface allows the lamina structure to unfold as a continuous red-and-gold field.
2. Tapered Vase – Model 2747 (1971)
Height: 27 cm
Diameter: 6.5 cm
An elegant elongated silhouette with subtle shoulder and narrowing neck. The vertical form intensifies the molten gold flow effect, creating dramatic light reflection.
3. Lidded Box (1973)
Height: 4.5 cm
Diameter: 6 cm
A compact counterpoint — grounded, minimal, precise. The lid aligns seamlessly with the body, demonstrating Rosenthal’s technical control over complex metallic surfaces.
All pieces marked Rosenthal Studio-Line, Germany.
The “Lamina Rot” Surface
Lamina Rot is not printed décor — it is a metallic lamination effect layered over deep red grounds.
The surface evokes:
• molten enamel
• cracked lacquer
• Byzantine gold tesserae
• volcanic cellular structures
Under light, the gold shifts between matte warmth and reflective brilliance, while the red oscillates between oxblood and vermilion.
Each piece carries individual variation — a hallmark of the Lamina technique.
Condition
Very good to excellent vintage condition.
No chips, cracks, or restorations.
Gold surface evenly preserved.
Minor age-related traces consistent with careful display.
Design Context
Helmut Drexler (1927–2016), decoration director at Rosenthal during its most experimental Studio-Line period, pushed porcelain beyond graphic modernism into material alchemy.
The early 1970s Lamina series represents:
• Metallic glaze innovation
• Post-Bauhaus modernism meeting baroque intensity
• Controlled surface experimentation
• Limited production decorative objects
This trio captures that moment fully — vertical, elongated, and contained forms unified by one of Rosenthal’s most dramatic finishes.
Collector’s Positioning
This is not merely decorative porcelain.
It offers:
• Cohesive three-piece Lamina Rot set
• Early production years (1970–73)
• Model-documented form (2747)
• Strong sculptural height variation
• High display impact
Lamina Rot examples, particularly in complete groupings, are significantly rarer than standard Studio-Line editions.
Ideal for collectors of:
• German modernist porcelain
• Rosenthal Studio-Line
• 1970s metallic surface design
• High-impact interior statements
Displayed together, the trio reads as a unified sculptural installation.
