Exquisite Rosenthal Porcelain Vase Duo – Design by Fritz von Stockmayer

Tall vase: approx. 28 cm in height, body width approx. 20 × 12.5 cm
Bowl-shaped vase: approx. 21 cm in height, diameter approx. 17 cm, opening 8.5 cm
Crafted in the late 1940s, these rare early postwar pieces exemplify the transitional moment between prewar decorative porcelain and the modernist ambitions that would shape Rosenthal’s post-1950 design philosophy.
About Fritz von Stockmayer
Fritz von Stockmayer was a distinguished porcelain painter and ceramicist long before joining Rosenthal. Prior to becoming Art Director of Rosenthal in Selb in 1935, he designed for important German manufactories including Arzberg, Schönwald, and Fürstenberg—building a reputation for intricate hand-painted decorations and innovative glazing approaches.
His artistic vocabulary was deeply shaped by his travels in Asia, where he studied traditional Oriental motifs and delicate surface techniques. Many of his designs, including the floral and branch-like patterns seen here, subtly echo these influences.Rosenthal honoured him with a dedicated monograph in 1942:
“Der Porzellanmaler Fritz von Stockmayer” – a testament to his impact on the company.
His works from the 1930s–40s are typically marked with his initials FvS, underscoring their authenticity.
Historical Context
The period during which Stockmayer led Rosenthal’s Art Department (1935–1940) was marked by profound political and cultural upheaval in Germany.Philipp Rosenthal—son of Jewish parents Emilie and Abraham Rosenthal—was pushed out of the company in 1934 due to his Jewish background, although the regime avoided public scandal due to Rosenthal’s global standing. After years in exile, his son Philip Rosenthal would return to the company in 1950.
During the NS era, many German firms were compelled to produce works aligned with the regime’s ideology. Rosenthal was no exception, and some output from the period reflects these enforced political pressures.Stockmayer’s role in this complex moment sits at the intersection of artistic excellence, institutional history, and the realities of producing decorative art under a totalitarian regime.Collectors of early Rosenthal often recognise these pieces as historical documents—objects whose beauty is inseparable from the era that produced them.
Condition
Both vases are in very good vintage condition, with light, age-appropriate wear consistent with pieces produced in the 1940s.
No cracks or chips. Surfaces remain clean, with the satin finish beautifully preserved.
