Rosenthal Studio-Line “Windmill” Bowl by Jan van der Vaart
Turquoise Glazed Porcelain, Germany, 1980s–1990s
A sculptural porcelain bowl designed by Jan van der Vaart (1931–2000), one of the most influential figures in postwar European ceramics and a central voice in Dutch modernist design. Renowned for his architectonic clarity and disciplined geometric language, van der Vaart transformed functional ceramic forms into rigorously balanced sculptural objects.
Produced by Rosenthal Studio-Line, this rare “Windmill” bowl exemplifies the artist’s unmistakable visual vocabulary: circular geometry interrupted by sharply articulated planes, creating a form that feels simultaneously calm, architectural, and subtly dynamic.
The luminous turquoise glaze — soft, refined, and gently speckled — reflects Rosenthal’s exceptionally high production standards and technical sophistication during the late 20th century.

About Jan van der Vaart
Jan van der Vaart is considered one of the defining figures of 20th-century Dutch ceramics. After joining the faculty of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 1968, he profoundly influenced generations of ceramic artists through his reductionist and highly structured approach to form.
His work is characterized by seriality, modular construction, symmetry, and geometric restraint, often existing at the intersection of sculpture, architecture, and functional design. His collaborations with Rosenthal remain among the most collectible interpretations of his studio practice in industrial porcelain production.
Collector’s Perspective
The “Windmill” series occupies a particularly important position within van der Vaart’s Rosenthal production, combining sculptural clarity with functional elegance. The strong geometry and radiant monochrome glaze allow the bowl to function equally as a utilitarian object, centerpiece, or autonomous sculptural form.
A refined and highly recognizable example of late modernist porcelain design — disciplined, luminous, and unmistakably architectural.
