Roger Guérin – Art Deco Four-Handled Ceramic Jug – Marked R16A – Bouffioulx, Belgium (c. 1925–1935)
Stoneware – Signed and numbered –
An exceptional Art Deco ceramic jug by renowned Belgian ceramist Roger Guérin (1896–1954), produced in his Bouffioulx studio during the interwar period. This striking piece features a globular body with four elegant loop handles, a narrow flared neck, and rich earth-toned glazes characteristic of Guérin’s high-fired stoneware (grès).
The jug is adorned with raised shield-shaped panels on four sides, each decorated with stylized heraldic motifs in black and gilded relief, including abstract symbols reminiscent of playing card suits (club, spade, diamond, star). The contrast between the metallic gold luster and matte black enamel creates a bold, geometric aesthetic firmly rooted in the Art Deco movement.
The underside is hand-incised with the artist’s signature Guérin and the model code R16A, indicating it is part of a documented series from the artist’s oeuvre. The form and motif are typical of Guérin’s interest in medieval symbolism interpreted through a modernist lens, making this a collectible example of his decorative work.
