ROCHE BOBOIS MAH JONG – MISSONI HOME – HANS HOPFER
A particularly beautiful and complete Mah Jong seating combination from Roche Bobois, upholstered in an exuberant large-floral fabric by Missoni Home from the Constellation Collection.
The Mah Jong was designed in 1971 by Hans Hopfer and grew into Roche Bobois' iconic design. The revolutionary starting point was simple: loose, low-to-the-ground seating and back elements that can be placed next to each other, stacked, and combined as desired. More than fifty years later, the Mah Jong is still in production and is one of the most recognizable modular seating systems in design history.
Roche Bobois collaborated with various big names in fashion and textile design for the Mah Jong, including Kenzo Takada, Jean Paul Gaultier, and Missoni. Especially the versions in Missoni Home fabrics have become strongly linked to the identity of the Mah Jong due to their distinctive patterns and use of color.
This piece is upholstered in Missoni Home fabric from the Constellation Collection. A particularly beautiful large-floral version with enormous graphic flowers and botanical shapes in soft lime and olive green, powder pink, coral, light blue/turquoise, beige, cream, and anthracite/black.
The combination of Hopfer's low, informal 70s design with Missoni's exuberant Italian textile design works exceptionally well here. Despite the large pattern, the color scheme remains relatively soft and refined.
COMPLETE AS A SEATING COMBINATION
The offered set consists of four matching parts in the same fabric:
• Original Mah Jong floor cushion / seating element
• Original Mah Jong backrest element
• Large loose cushion, approx. 45 × 45 × 12 cm
• Smaller loose cushion, approx. 38 × 38 × 11 cm
This makes the set itself a complete, very generous low armchair/lounge chair. Of course, thanks to the modular Mah Jong concept, it can also be combined with other Mah Jong elements.
ORIGINALITY
The backrest element is equipped with the original Roche Bobois label.
The inner cushion of the floor element is also original Roche Bobois and marked. The cover of the floor element has a zipper.
The small loose cushion is also labeled.
CONDITION
Very neat and fresh used condition. The fabric presents beautifully and the colors are still vibrant and clear. No tears or disturbing damage.
Only a slight discoloration is visible on the back, consistent with age and use. Please see the photos for this.
