Ionic Rex Dining Chair (dining chair variant), a world-famous mid-century modern design from 1956 by the Slovenian architect and designer Niko Kralj. Designed by Niko Kralj for the furniture factory Stol Kamnik in the former Yugoslavia. The chair is so significant that it has been included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. Made of curved beech wood and plywood with characteristic milled grooves in the seat and backrest. This creates a lightweight, airy appearance. The chair features an ingenious, fluid folding mechanism. When folded, the chair takes up hardly any space. Thanks to the light, flowing curve in the wooden slats, the chair molds perfectly to the body for very high seating comfort.
This is a vintage item. This means it has been used. Items are not new or perfect, but they are very beautiful! Most vintage items show signs of use. The extent to which these signs of use are present is stated in the description. Photos are part of this description. Please examine them carefully. Vintage (read: used) items sometimes show color variations, uneven wear, and/or normal wear. Please take this into account when making a purchase.
The iconic Rex folding chair is a masterpiece by Slovenian designer Niko Kralj, produced by Stol Kamnik in the 1950s. This specific design is praised worldwide for its progressive silhouette and ingenious folding mechanism, making it an indispensable part of post-war design history.
Crafted from carefully bent wood, this chair displays a refined slat structure that offers both visual lightness and ergonomic comfort. The light wood tone highlights the natural grain of the material and aligns seamlessly with the minimalist aesthetic of the mid-twentieth century. The original manufacturer's mark is clearly visible on the frame, confirming the authenticity and Slovenian origin of this collector's item.
The object is in excellent, original condition with a beautifully developed patina that bears witness to decades of careful use. The structural integrity of the folding mechanism has been fully preserved, ensuring that the chair is not only an aesthetic object but also remains fully functional for daily use.
This timeless classic makes a subtle yet striking addition to a modern or Scandinavian-inspired interior. Thanks to its flexible character and architectural lines, the chair comes into its own perfectly in a reading nook, a bright conservatory, or as a sculptural accent in a minimalist living space.
