Restoring Liberty, 2020
Pigment ink print
Edition of 250
About the work: With its cartoonish style, this image is adorned with lightness to better express its political commitment. It shows U.S. President Joe Biden holding the head of the Statue of Liberty in his hands. If the title seems sufficient to justify the good intentions of the American president, this image remains surprising. It follows an image created by the artist in 2017, featuring former US President Donald Trump decapitating the Statue of Liberty. This was followed by a long series of satirical illustrations of Donald Trump. These reuse the aesthetic codes of road signs to draw the eye to the notion of imminent danger, introduced, according to the artist, by the color orange. Restoring Liberty seems to be the conclusion of this series of sharp criticisms of the former American president, as much as a message of hope for the United States.
Born in 1971 in Havana (Cuba), Edel Rodriguez is an artist and author of children's books. He began his career as editor of Time magazine from 1994 to 2008, where he undertook a major illustration project. He continued in the commercial field, creating covers for magazines such as The Times and Communication Arts. In 2017, he graced the cover of Der Spiegel magazine with an image of US President Donald Trump beheading the Statue of Liberty. Distributed worldwide, this cover was followed by a four-year series of satirical illustrations, concluding in 2020 after the election of Joe Biden. His work, in all its political dimensions, has been widely disseminated and acclaimed throughout Western society. He has also taken part in numerous exhibitions, notably at Antwerp's Mekanik Strip Gallery and at Lyons Weir Ltd. Gallery in New York in 2011.
