This expressive portrait was created by the Dutch artist René Rikkelman. The work displays a powerful, figurative depiction of a woman's face, in which the raw texture of the surface plays an essential role in the composition.
The painting is constructed using mixed media on unprepared jute, which is subsequently stretched onto a linen support. The coarse structure of the jute contrasts sharply with the impasto, white brushstrokes and the dark, charcoal-like lines that define the facial features. The work is signed by the artist in the lower right corner and is stretched on a black framework that serves as a subtle frame.
This artwork is in excellent condition, with the frayed edges of the jute being a deliberate artistic choice that contributes to the character of the piece. The texture and the layered paint application have remained completely intact.
