The piece of furniture shown is the striking "Cup Chair", designed by Eric Degenhardt for the German furniture manufacturer Richard Lampert.
The armchair stands out with its sculptural, almost architectural design, which is characterized by precise geometries and clear lines. The high, upholstered backrest flows seamlessly into the side armrests, creating a protected, almost embracing sitting position. The reduced yet sculptural design is striking, with all surfaces in an exciting angular relationship to one another.
The entire armchair is upholstered in a vibrant red fabric, whereby the materiality is finely structured and hard-wearing. The construction is based on an inner frame that is softly upholstered and covered all around. The legs or base frame are part of the armrests that are pulled down to the side and are also upholstered - giving the chair a monolithic yet slightly futuristic appearance.
The "open back" is particularly characteristic, with a horizontal upholstered element acting as a connecting bar between the two side sections - functionally and creatively a kind of backrest crossbeam.
The Cup Chair was originally designed as a lounge or conference chair, but is equally suitable for modern living and reception areas. The design reflects Eric Degenhardt's typical interplay of minimalist aesthetics and technical sophistication.
