There was a time when needlework rarely left the living room. Near an armchair, threads, needles, balls of yarn, a few buttons, and that piece of fabric to be resumed the next day were kept within reach. It is to this domestic world, now almost disappeared, that this delightful rattan sewing workbox belongs. Much more than a simple basket, it was designed as a true small piece of furniture. Its blonde rattan structure features remarkable bending and binding work. Long slender rods form the sides of the basket, while a series of large rattan loops runs all around its upper part, giving the whole a light and particularly decorative silhouette. The workbox rests on a delicately arched base and has its large handle, which once allowed it to be easily moved from one room to another with the ongoing work. Inside remains its printed fabric lining, in cream, green, and red tones, with a charming pattern evoking Indian chintz fabrics and Provençal textiles. This fabric immediately brings to the piece that warm atmosphere of family homes and mid-20th century interiors. The rattan retains a beautiful honey hue and that patina that only several decades can give it. Some signs of age are present, as well as a small damaged strand visible under the structure. The interior textile also shows signs of wear, visible in the photographs. It will naturally regain its primary function with a sewing or knitting enthusiast, but could just as beautifully hold balls of wool, antique linens, magazines, or simply become a vintage rattan decorative object in a bedroom, living room, or studio. Height: approx. 42 cm. Basket width: approx. 30 cm. 1960s-1970s.
