Product description
An exceptionally rare, early Treetops floor lamp, designed in 1981 by Ettore Sottsass for Memphis Milano. This model is among the most iconic designs of the first Memphis collection and exemplifies the radical design approach of postmodernism. The composition is a sculptural staging of basic geometric forms: A powerfully curved, high-gloss red lacquered steel tube emerges from a solid, textured green prismatic base. The asymmetrically positioned lamp head comprises a luminous yellow cube, a red triangular element, a black strut, and a striking blue cylinder as a structural joint. Circle, triangle, and rectangle exist in a deliberately dynamic balance—a functional lamp and autonomous sculpture in one. This particular example is distinguished by its completely original coloring, preserved within the classic Memphis palette. The surfaces exhibit an authentic, period-typical paint finish with a consistent gloss level and convincing patina – no repainting, no color variations, but a coherent, early production. The original Memphis-Milano plaque on the base is particularly noteworthy. This is missing from the majority of examples on the market and represents a key indicator of authenticity. Combined with the original color scheme, this makes the piece especially desirable for collectors. Early Memphis lamps from 1981 rarely appear on the market in such authentic condition. Treetops is one of Sottsass's most museum-acclaimed masterpieces and has been published and exhibited internationally – a key object in the design history of the late 20th century. Condition: Very good, age-appropriate original condition with minimal, honest signs of wear on the base edges. The paint is vibrant and homogeneous, and the electrical components are functional. The original plaque is present. Item number: 15600 Dimensions: L85 x W25 x H195 cm
