This iconic pendant lamp by Poul Henningsen for Louis Poulsen is one of the most significant lighting designs of the 20th century and exemplifies the Scandinavian design philosophy of functionality, precision, and atmospheric lighting. Developed in 1958, the design is based on a sophisticated multi-shade system that distributes light completely glare-free while simultaneously creating an even, warm illumination. This particular version is distinguished by its rarer violet color scheme, combined with cream-colored shade elements and the characteristic red and blue interior. These colored accents are not merely decorative but integral to the original lighting concept: they neutralize the light and improve color rendering, creating a particularly pleasant ambiance. Formally, the PH 5 is a perfectly balanced interplay of concentric shades that are staggered downwards, precisely directing the light.
