ULTRA-CONFIDENTIAL ARTWORK – AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE DISCERNING COLLECTOR
A superb and imposing original sculpture by the French artist Jean Pons (1913-2005), a key figure of the School of Paris. While Jean Pons's paintings and lithographs are celebrated in the world's greatest museums, his three-dimensional creations are extremely rare. The artist made only very few forays into sculpture, making this totem a true historical anomaly and a highly coveted collector's item. The piece's aesthetic:
This direct-carved totem features an elongated face with incised features of great expressionist power, strongly influenced by primitive art. The original patina and polychromy create a striking contrast of red and black, offering incredible visual presence and graphic force in a contemporary or designer interior.
Note on the artist's market:
Due to its obscurity, Jean Pons's sculpted work rarely appears on the market. By comparison, one of his rare wooden assemblages, entitled "Temple of Idiocy" (1974), sold for over €1,100 at auction in 1993 at the prestigious Briest auction house in Paris. The direct carving technique employed here makes this piece even more intimate and sought after.
