Offered for acquisition: an authentic chromolithograph from the famous standard botanical work 'Reichenbachia: Orchids Illustrated and Described'.
This work was drawn by the celebrated botanical artist Henry George Moon and printed in 1888 by Joseph Mansell for Frederick Sander.
This depicts the Coelogyne cristata maxima (also known as the 'Snow Queen'), a beautifully serene and atmospheric work with remarkable layering.
Why this is a guaranteed original copy from 1888:
Tactile layering: The ink is palpable on the thick paper. The characteristic sheen of the gum arabic on the leaves is clearly visible in the detail photos, a process that adds depth to the colors.
Traditional printing technique: Not modern pixel or raster printing, but the authentic 'dotted grain' of the hand-drawn lithographic stone. Mounted text strip: The name of the orchid is printed on a separate strip, as is unique to the original first edition, and mounted onto the plate by hand. The artisanal text setting (including the 'œ' ligature in Cœlogyne) is clearly visible.
Size & Paper: Printed on heavy, high-quality paper measuring approx. 34.5 x 43 cm (Imperial Quarto).
Condition:
The plate is in very good condition for its age of over 135 years. There is minimal foxing and natural discoloration of the paper. Due to previous framing, a slight line is visible where an old passe-partout was located; this can easily be covered up with a new frame or actually contributes to the authentic character of the antique paper.
