Martin Freyer for Rosenthal Studio-Line
Op Art Floor Vase Pair – A Rare Duo of Sculptural Illusion (H 38.5 + 20 cm)
🎩 A Masterclass in Porcelain Optics and Modernist Form
This exceptionally rare duo of Op Art floor vases is the work of Hans Martin Freyer, one of the most visionary German designers of the 20th century. Created for Rosenthal Studio-Line during the peak of its experimental output in the 1960s–70s, these porcelain vessels transcend functionality, standing as architectural objects in their own right — minimalist in silhouette, yet optically mesmerizing.
Crafted in pure white porcelain with intricate relief surface textures, the vases demonstrate Freyer’s mastery of visual rhythm and spatial illusion. Their surfaces appear to shift and breathe with the light, subtly echoing Op Art pioneers like Victor Vasarely and Bridget Riley — but here, rendered in sculptural form.

🌀 About the Designer
Hans Martin Freyer was a polymath of postwar design: trained as a painter and graphic artist, he left an indelible mark on industrial design, from corporate branding (including early VW campaigns) to architectural ceramics. Between 1964 and 1974, Freyer developed some of Rosenthal’s most daring porcelain designs — infusing Bauhaus rigor with Optical Art abstraction.
His Studio-Line pieces, such as the Glasstruktur, Graph, and Stratos vases, played with the viewer’s perception, transforming porcelain into a language of shadow, depth, and illusion.
