L. van der Vlught (Gispen) – Tubular Steel Lounge / Armchair, Model VI-A-138, 1931 (Netherlands)
A rare Dutch Modernist armchair designed by L. van der Vlught (1931) and produced by Gispen (outside assortment), documented as model VI-A-138 (NL) in the reference page shown.
This piece captures the pure “Nieuwe Bouwen” / Bauhaus-era language: a clean, architectural chromed tubular-steel structure with a generous, floating seat and elegantly drawn arm loops. The chair features upholstered seat and back in a deep brick-red textile, paired with black armrests (Bakelite / lacquered finish), and a distinctive spring-suspension back construction—a hallmark of early Dutch functionalist seating.
A strong statement chair that reads equally well in a minimalist interior, a collector’s modernist setting, or alongside other iconic tubular steel designs from the early 1930s.
