Exceptional German modernist coffee table from the 1960s with an etched/patinated copper top and height-adjustable base. This table has been in our family for approximately 50 years and was purchased by my parents around 1975, from memory, at De Bijenkorf. The most remarkable feature is the mechanism: using the lever under the tabletop, the table is height-adjustable from approximately 46 to 63 cm via the telescopic central column. The tabletop measures 140 × 65 cm and is approximately 3 cm thick. The copper features a characteristic abstract black/oxidized pattern. The base consists of a black metal five-armed star foot with copper-colored details. After research, I found this exact table model on several international vintage/design platforms. An identical example is described as: “Modernist Adjustable Copper Coffee Table, Germany, 1960s – in the style of Bernhard Rohne.” The identical piece has the same dimensions of 140 × 65 cm, the same brass top, the same five-arm base, and the same height adjustment system. It is being offered internationally by a specialized design dealer. Bernhard Rohne is known for his characteristic etched and oxidized metal surfaces. However, no maker's mark or signature was found on this table. Therefore, I am emphatically not offering it as a signed Bernhard Rohne, but correctly as German 1960s design in the style of Bernhard Rohne. The table is in original vintage condition and has deliberately not been repolished or restored. As a result, the brass has retained its authentic patina and normal signs of use and age. Please also see the detail photos for this. The height adjustment mechanism works. A special and now hard-to-find piece for lovers of mid-century modern, Brutalist design, and vintage German design.
