Velvet upholstered modular sofa on original steel suspension frame
Designed in 1970, the Marenco sofa by Mario Marenco for Arflex stands as one of the most influential and recognizable icons of Italian radical design. Conceived as an informal, sculptural seating system, the Marenco challenged conventional sofa design through its generous volumes, loose cushions and uncompromising focus on comfort.
This particular example represents a rare early production edition, distinguished by its original internal steel frame with metal suspension brackets. This construction method is exclusive to the first generation Marenco sofas and was later simplified in subsequent editions. The robust industrial frame reflects Arflex’s experimental approach in the early 1970s, prioritizing structure, flexibility and long term comfort.
The original foam and internal construction have been preserved, resulting in a deep and exceptionally comfortable seating experience that clearly differs from later reissues. The sofa has been carefully reupholstered in a beautiful, high quality velvet in a rich warm brown tone. The fabric enhances the sculptural character of the design while maintaining full respect for the original proportions and intent.
