Product description
Discover the Elegance of Hutschenreuther Selb – Masterpieces by Cuno Fischer Sculptural Bisque Porcelain Vase with Figural Relief | Signed & Dated 1969 An outstanding and extremely rare example of German post-war design, this large bisque porcelain vase (height 33 cm, diameter approx. 21 cm) was conceived by painter, graphic artist, and stage designer Cuno Fischer (1914–2003) and produced by Lorenz Hutschenreuther Selb, in collaboration with the esteemed Rosenthal porcelain group. Executed in white matte porcelain, this monumental vessel is encircled by a continuous low relief of stylized female figures in folkloric dress — a poetic frieze of ritual, body, and ornament. Fischer’s signature graphic line, with its lyrical abstraction and tactile detail, is translated here with remarkable finesse, turning ceramic into narrative sculpture. The base features the incised signature “F.69”, the impressed “cuno fischer”, and the green Hutschenreuther Selb mark. Rare in both form and condition, this piece exemplifies the fruitful intersection of fine and applied arts in postwar Germany. A museum-worthy object — compelling from every angle. Historical Context Founded in 1814 in Bavaria, Hutschenreuther Selb developed into one of Germany’s premier porcelain manufacturers, celebrated for their innovative collaborations with artists throughout the 20th century. Cuno Fischer (1914–2003) was a multifaceted German artist known for his radical crossover between painting, stage design, and industrial art. In the 1960s and 70s, he worked with Rosenthal Studio Line and Hutschenreuther, creating ceramics with tribal, mythic, and abstract reliefs — often reminiscent of scarification and ritual art. He also designed avant-garde glassworks for Gral Glas and remained active in art criticism and theater design. Fischer’s personal mythology — including a long sojourn with a French Romani family and the adoption of his daughter Marianne Adam — infused his work with a uniquely humanistic and transgressive spirit.
