Rare Ceremonial Spoon – Triple Figure Composition – Confirmed Ritual Use – Private Collection (40 Years)
Acquired in Dakar, Senegal, in the 1980s (with its wooden base) from a Beninese antique dealer who regularly traveled throughout West Africa—a connoisseur with direct access to authentic ritual objects from Ivory Coast and beyond. Sole French private ownership since acquisition.
Triple Figure Composition: Three faces carved at different levels of the handle—an exceptionally rare iconographic composition, denoting high ceremonial status.
Baoulé Refinement: Each face displays the distinctive features of Baoulé sculpture—an elongated oval face, a domed forehead, finely modeled almond-shaped eyes, a small and precise mouth, and delicate scarifications on the forehead.
Lozenges Necklace: A wide, geometrically incised necklace around the neck of the main figure—a mark of social distinction.
Finely Incised Hairstyle: Parallel incisions depicting the elaborate hairstyle, a recurring marker of prestige in Baoulé figurative art.
Deep Ritual Patina: The bowl displays a deep and irregular patina of wear, consistent with decades of authentic ceremonial use. The surface luster developed through long handling is difficult to replicate.
Condition: Very good, consistent with age and use. General natural wear.
Height: 73 cm (with base)
Material: Dense tropical wood, natural patina
Dating: Mid-20th century or earlier
Provenance: Acquired in Dakar, Senegal, 1980s. Beninese antique dealer (West African specialist). The sole piece in a French private collection since its acquisition.
