An Enigmatic Literary Discovery
This is an exceptional and previously unpublished proof of *The Marvelous Story of Pao-Se*, printed in 1925 by Frazier-Soye. This work constitutes a true "UFO" in the world of bibliophilia, shrouded in historical mystery.
The Context
The translator/author "JB-Lin" is generally considered to be the pseudonym of Jean Baylin, a diplomat and future director of the Bank of Indochina, who was later assassinated. Academic research (V. Traversari-Goletto) devoted to Nobel laureate Saint-John Perse reveals that Baylin—a close friend of Perse in Beijing—personally dedicated a "deluxe edition" of this work to him. While experts debate whether Baylin was the translator or the true author, his profound involvement is undeniable.
The Mystery of the "Proof"
This copy deviates from the official print run of 250 copies (225 numbered, 24 hors commerce, and a unique copy on China paper).
Unique Characteristics: It lacks the usual colophon (the page indicating the edition numbers), but it is complete with all 60 pages, plus two additional blank leaves.
Hypothesis: Is this a printer's proof, a publisher's copy, or a preliminary layout produced before the official colophon was printed? Its provenance remains a fascinating enigma that the next owner may attempt to solve.
Condition and Aesthetics
With the exception of the "arabat" folder (the outer protective cover), the interior and plates are in excellent condition. The vibrant blue pigments and the quality of the period paper are remarkable.
The watercolors can be extracted and framed, or better yet, a high-fidelity copy can be made to preserve the complete work.
