A rare foraging basket from southwest France with a very interesting history. The baskets were made entirely by hand and required hours of meticulous work. First, the branches of a young chestnut tree were picked in autumn and early winter. The wood was left to dry outdoors for some time to give the bark a slightly patinated appearance. To separate the bark from the wood, the branches were carefully baked in the domestic oven (these baskets were not made for commercial purposes, they were used by local workers as a means of exchange for other goods). The bark was then carefully separated from the wood into thin strips and woven to form the basket, still warm and supple.
Very few of these baskets were made exclusively by men (the work was considered too difficult for women) and used as gifts to family and friends or, as I said, in exchange for other necessities. It was a craft passed down from generation to generation as the family gathered around the fire during the long, cold winter months.
This art form lost popularity in 1925.
Folk art at its best, this basket is in perfect condition, totally free of insect infiltration.
Lovingly cleaned, with just a few spots of wear due to its age...
