Product description
Are you looking for a unique, (fairly) rare, and characterful piece of furniture with a story? This elegant, round wooden side table (gueridon) is a rare sight thanks to the classic artisanal (cabriolet leg) finish of the tabletop and the graceful design from the early 20th century. Presumably (Danish) beech wood (there is also a curved wooden edge on the tabletop with dovetail joints), the color (lacquer) leans towards mahogany/cherry. The base/top may be partly made of mahogany. Beech wood is easier to bend after the steam process (this process was developed by Thonet). The absolute eye-catcher of this small table is the soft pink tabletop. This was handcrafted using the classic early 20th-century Marezzo Scagliola method (also known as American Scagliola). In this casting technique, liquid white plaster was poured into a mold, where the marble veins were formed by pulling colored strands through the material. The underside still displays the authentic, characteristic drying pits of this liquid casting process. After hardening, these surfaces were often polished and sealed with wax or lacquer. This gives the tabletop the brilliant, deep shine and luxurious appearance of real pink marble, but with the unique texture and history of an antique work of art. This technique was often referred to as the trompe-l'œil effect ('deceive the eye' effect). The small table has also acquired a considerable weight. At some point in time, a custom-made glass plate was added to prevent further signs of wear. You can see this slightly through the glass. The table almost certainly dates from the interwar period (approx. 1920s–1930s). The influences of early Art Deco and classical furniture styles are clearly visible in the elegantly curved, slender legs and the warm, dark wood tone. The table also features a practical, round lower shelf that offers extra stability and storage space. A beautiful statement piece for a classic, eclectic, or modern vintage interior! Dimensions (always approximate, but measured with the utmost care): Height 60 cm Diameter 46.5 cm (top), bottom shelf 31.5 cm There are signs of use. It was decided not to have any further restoration work done. A characterful item deserves to be left as is.
